There’s a saying many hands make light work.
Twenty possum boxes are the result of a successful community partnership between Parramatta Men’s Shed, Parramatta High School, Karabi Community Services and WIRES.
The project was made possible by a Parramatta Council grant to WIRES, which approached the men’s shed to construct the boxes to rehome injured and displaced brushtail possums.
The men’s shed teamed up with Karabi Community Services at Constitution Hill to work with 10 Parramatta High School students one day a week for three weeks to build the possum boxes.
The last of the boxes were completed last week.
“It’s part of our community service,” men’s shed secretary Rob Colless said.
“Not only the boys learned new skills, they were also mentored by positive male role models. We’ve seen a big change in the boys from when they started. They were so enthusiastic by the end that they were reluctant to put the tools down when it was time for a break. They realised there’s more to life than mucking around. We’re looking at more opportunities to work with Karabi Community Services.”
The Parramatta Men’s Shed opened in Fleet Street in 2013.
It aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues and to provide a place for them to socialise with other blokes and do metal and woodwork.
The men’s shed is open 10am-2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
